## What it looks like

## The v2: with a common house
![[Pasted image 20251012190747.png]]
## The Archive: absorbing each other's superpowers
- When you surround yourself with people you love and admire, in a setting that encourages spontaneous interaction, you naturally become your best self
- The magic: **rate of unplanned interactions with people you love and respect**
- Coliving sweet spot: 12-18 housemates, 4-8 years, lifelong friendships
- **Everyone had a superpower to teach**:
- Josh taught me all my productivity systems
- Tom showed me I could get into ML without a PhD
- Kanjun taught me to pick out 1:1 conversations at parties
- The Archive Mafia — the friends who came out of that house
## Being the epicenter of a [[Scenius]]
- **If genius comes from your genes, "scenius" comes from your scene**
- A scenius = time and place responsible for inordinate progress (Renaissance Florence, 1920s Paris, Silicon Valley 1970s)
- Or: **an environment that helps elicit your latent potential**
## Baby Happy Hours at Radish
- **Best practices from Radish**:
- Parallel parenting over coparenting
- Families in private units
- Friends within **Baby Monitor Distance** = social life after kids go to bed at 7pm
- **Baby Happy Hour every day 5:30-7pm in the yard**
- Being Aunties and Uncles to your friends' kids
- When it takes forty minutes to get a toddler ready to leave the house, turn them loose into a backyard where their friends are already playing = **freeing**
- Parenting doesn't have to mean "exasperated and alone"
## Esmerelda and Chautauqua
- [[Why Edge Esmerelda works]]
- **Esmerelda works because the rate of unplanned interactions with people you love and respect is very high**
- Spontaneous living: bump into a friend, agree you need coffee, walk across the plaza—15 minutes of connection built into your workday
- Requires: walkable setting + common knowledge of accessible spaces
- Living within walking distance of so many friends makes life **serendipitous**

## Unplanned encounters, especially around shared activities
The magic is the **rate of unplanned encounters**. HOWEVER, 90 seconds of small talk while passing each other on the sidewalk forever is also my personal hell. The bump-ins that build real depth happen around **shared activities**, and the more *variety* of things there are to actually do together, the more a chance encounter turns into something. The deepest form of this is mutual reliance: doing the things you'd have to do together, not only the ones you both happen to enjoy.[^1]
## SB 684, 1211
![[Pasted image 20251012184929.png]]
- 1211: With this law you can now build an equal number of ADUs to existing units. So a duplex can get 2 ADUs, a triplex can get 3 new ADUs and a quadplex can get 4 new ADUs. Up to 8 ADUs! And you can do this on parking spaces without replacing them.

[^1]: From a conversation with Rosa Trilesskaya (Otter — Social Connection Challenges): "the strongest way is figuring out how to actually… mutually rely on each other and how to do things together that you would have to do, because for hobbies you don't actually have to do them."
