In San Francisco, homes built before 1971 are rent-controlled. This means that allowable rent increases per year are capped at [60% of the SF Urban CPI increase](https://www.bls.gov/regions/west/news-release/consumerpriceindex_sanfrancisco.htm), updated March 1 every year. Additionally, [AB 1482](https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billTextClient.xhtml?bill_id=201920200AB1482) (2019) caps annual rent increases for existing tenants at 5% + inflation, or 10%, whichever is lower. The law does not apply to properties less than 15 years old, non-corporate-owned single-family rentals, and owner-occupied duplexes.
